One
more legend about the origin of the lake
(Morske oko – Sea Eye)
Once
upon a time there were free people living among primeval forest.
They hunted, shepherded… But some master appeared and their
life became joyless. He punished people even for the least fault.
Once
a misfortune happened. The wolves attacked the sheep, so a young
shepherd Ivan lost the whole flock. He decided not to wait for
the master’s violence. He said “good bye” to his beloved and
left his motherland to strange lands overseas …
The
shepherd was homesick in the foreign country. Every night he
went to the blue sea to unburden his heart and sorrow: “Oh,
you, omnipotent sea, cast a glance at least by one eye on my
Verchovyna, make a low bow to the native land.” And the miracle
happened: suddenly the sea broke through the earth and took
up the master and his servants. But the sea did not come back
to its shores; it was lost in contemplation of the proud Carpathians
and left there forever. Blue and clear like “eye of sea”…
